For someone like me, finding a new salon to trust with my hair takes a lot of time, effort, and risk. I have had such a difficult time finding a good stylist that I often travel back to Florida from Atlanta to get my hair done. You’ll need to come up with some creative hair salon & spa marketing ideas & strategies to drum up new clientele.

If you’re running an Atlanta hair salon, you need to stand out from the competition to attract customers! We have are some hair salon marketing ideas and strategies for service-based businesses to use to help you grow your customer base and help you with your hair salon marketing ideas.

1. Referral Discounts

How about offering a little reward to your clients to encourage them to do the advertising for you for free and to refer new customers your way?  I would recommend sending an email or postcard to tell them, “Thank you for referring us to your friend, Sarah! We are thrilled you thought of us, and we want you to know we are thinking of you, too.” Here is $15 off your next visit.

2. Punch Cards and Loyalty Programs

Taking great care of your clients is important. Let them know how much you appreciate their loyalty by giving them discounts after every ten visits.

Perhaps they’ve been coming to you for long enough for the price of services to go up. In that case, you can give them the discounted price. Customers are what businesses thrive on, and salons can easily take advantage of them.

3. Geotargeted Advertising

Adwords or Facebook, geotargeted ads are your best friends. This is especially true if your salon is located in another state than the one you are advertising to. Need help setting it up? We have great guides on Google AdWords targeting and Facebook targeting options.

4. Mobile Ads

Like geotargeting, mobile ads can be immensely valuable, especially with AdWords new bidding features that allow users to bid differently on desktop and mobile.

5. Yelp

It is easy to claim your business on Yelp, add photos, and respond to customer reviews. You can also offer discounts to customers who check in at your location, or package deals, i.e. give a manicure & pedicure for 10% off.

6. Highlight your Staff’s talents

Having magazines as inspiration in the waiting area of a salon is always fun, but even better is knowing that my stylist can get it done! Instead of magazine pictures, try assembling a binder of styles and cuts that your staff has developed—maybe a collection of photos from your Instagram!

7. Use Hashtags to Pitch Your Salons for Events

Using hashtags are extremely useful. It’s so convenient to have all of your photos easily indexed with a hashtag.

A salon has the added benefit that you can use them to be proactive by finding couples who are announcing their engagements, bachelor parties, and weddings by using hashtags, so that you can be proactive and then direct message them with your sales pitch.

8. Accept Online Reservations

The online reservations feature is very convenient for me since I usually look for a new hair salon when I’m burning time during my commute. I’m reluctant to make a phone call when that’s probably not a good time.

In the event that online reservations are not feasible for you, you may wish to make an email address available on your contact page for people to inquire about scheduling an appointment with you.

9. Post Coupons in Your Local Area

Local businesses and residents depend heavily on each other. Small businesses provide the residents with convenient and high-quality products and services, while the residents support the services and products of local businesses by purchasing from them and referring them to their family and friends. Coupons are a great way to encourage customers to try local businesses and forge stronger business ties.

10. Get Email Addresses

You can use email addresses to remind people of appointments, encourage them to sign up for newsletters, give referral bonuses, and remarket to them on Facebook.

11. Take Advantage of Instagram

One of my guilty pleasures is watching videos on Instagram.I especially like seeing someone’s hair colored or new hairstyle, or getting extensions in. Record your clients if you can; obviously. Have them share the videos to attract their friends to your salon!

12. Utilize Facebook

On Instagram there is a “share” button that allows you to share your testimonials and videos on both platforms! If you have longer-form tips you may consider starting with Facebook since users tend to spend longer time on a single post.

Also, make use of Facebook’s carousel ads! They’re a great way to showcase your work and appointments. Ads on Facebook allow you to target an audience based on age, distance, or interests — maybe they’ll be celebrating a birthday soon.

13. Discounts for Birthday Promotions

By asking your clientele for their birth date, you can send out a birthday promotion—a discounted blowout or makeup session, maybe. Or, celebrate your salon’s birthday with a one-week promotion.

14. Keep Business Cards Handy

A stranger complimenting your hair or nails on the subway or while shopping is a good opportunity for you to say, “Thank you! I did it myself, here is my business card if you’re interested.”

15. Make Videos

It may seem trivial, but you can use content for anything from blog posts about nightmare makeovers to tutorial videos.

You can turn your staff’s knowledge into something useful to your audience by sharing a simple video on how to properly trim bangs. This is something that will get your name out there, and you can welcome anyone who needs further assistance with a bang trim.
